Cave Satu Mare

"Kolik" cave Satu Mare

HOW TO GET HERE

North of the village a mountain has risen, which is called Leshegy (Ambush Mountain) because according to tradition the sentry post of Máré fortress could be found there. When the enemy approached, flame-signs coming from Budvár hill were transmitted to the village from here.

On the almost vertical rocky side of this mountain are the two caves of Kőlik, where the people found safety when they were threatened. There are two almost inaccessible caves, one above the other. The lower cave (15 pace long, 10 pace wide) has a properly adjusted arch. At the entrance are still visible the door hinges, which sustained strong iron gates, there stands still the chimney of the fireplace, and the querns niche. The higher second cave, which can only be reached by experienced climbers, is smaller than the first one. The two caves were linked with a “speaking tube”, which was used for communication between the two caves – according to the tradition bird language was used so that the enemy would not be able to understand. From the windows of the higher cave the „chimney-cake” (a traditional cake) was shown for the Tatars.
